Watermelon that was almost kidnapped

In this memory, I’m nine. It’s summer, and my friend, her family and my family are on a camping trip together. As soon as we got to the camp site, adults started pitching the tents, and my friend and I came to explore the nearby creek.

Despite the heat outside, the water is very cool. As we walk in the fast current, the cold water caresses our legs in the most pleasant way.

Suddenly, two boys of our age catch our attention. They are standing nearby, busy checking out something in the water. That something is – a watermelon. Not just any watermelon, but the one that our parents have placed in the water some time ago in the hope of keeping it cool! Now, the two boys seem excited, trying to take the watermelon out of water.

“They’re taking away our watermelon!” My friend and I look at each other. “What do we do?”

The two boys spend some time trying different ways to carry the huge fruit. Slowly, they get the hang of it, and the watermelon starts lifting…

“Hey there!” My friend and I jump in front of the boys. “What are you doing there? Is that a watermelon?”

Perhaps surprised by our sudden approach, they drop the fruit and run away.

Thus, the watermelon is saved from the kidnapping attempt, and the story is forever to stay in my memory.
